We just surveyed a bunch of folks about what the two toughest things are that they had to learn on the job. Here are the top 3 answers.
1. How to make money (run a successful business)
2. Communication (with anyone and everyone)
3. How to market the business
We have attached a worksheet we use to help clients understand How to Make Money. Here's how to use this tool.
a. Your staff, and maybe you, don't think about the sales-production-revenue cycle. You sell a job today, you do the job next month, you get paid for the work in 30-45 days after that.
The work you sell today doesn't show up as cash in the bank for maybe a couple of months.
b. You have a set amount of money you need to have available to cover overhead and salaries every month. That should be your minimum target each month for sales, production, and revenue.
c. You monitor your sales, production, and revenue as you go through the month. If sales fall off this month, production will be down next month, and you won't have enough cash to pay your bills a couple months out.
Figure out what the time lag is for your firm. Track the numbers and show your staff how they make money.
