Using LinkedIn’s Search Function Searching on LinkedIn is much like searching any database, since that is what LI essentially is. This document shows the basic search, plus the many categories you can use with advanced search. The search function is in the top right corner of your LI screen. Basic Search If you know who you’re looking for, the basic search is a good place to start. If you are looking for someone with a common name, such as John Smith, enter “John Smith” and a location to narrow your search. Or if you know the company John works for, you can enter “John Smith” and “XYZ”.

Inbox · Groups
People, jobs, and companies are pretty obvious. Answers are to search for answers to questions that members have posted. To better understand this section, read the help file on LI. Inbox is to search your inbox for a message from someone. The Groups search is to look for groups that you might want to join. You might search for “Georgia Tech Alumni” (there are several of these groups) or “bass fishing in Georgia.” There are thousands of groups that you might want to join to hang out with people like you. Or you might join a group to learn from the discussion on that group. I’ve learned a lot about some green technology by belonging to green groups. I recommend the Civil Engineering Central group for civil engineers. It has good discussion on non-technical issues. You are limited to 50 groups. Belonging to groups also helps raise your profile when others are searching for someone like you.
